What changed on July 1, 2026

Ontario's auto insurance rules changed on July 1, 2026. Medical and rehabilitation benefits are still part of every auto policy, and your auto insurer now pays first for accident-related treatment. You no longer have to use up your workplace benefits before your auto claim covers physio or chiro.

What to do after an accident

  1. Get checked. See a doctor, walk-in clinic or emergency department if you have any concerning symptoms.
  2. Tell your auto insurer. Report the accident and say you want to apply for accident benefits. Ontario rules ask you to notify your insurer within 7 days.
  3. Fill out your application. Your insurer sends an application form (the OCF-1). Send it back within 30 days of getting it.
  4. Book an assessment with us. Bring your claim number, insurer name and adjuster's name if you have them. If you don't have them yet, book anyway and we'll help you get them.

The forms, explained

FormWhat it does
OCF-23Treatment plan for minor injuries such as most whiplash, sprains and strains
OCF-18Treatment plan for injuries that need care beyond the minor-injury program
OCF-21Invoice to your insurer for approved treatment
OCF-24Discharge report when your minor-injury program ends

Treatment plans and invoices go to your insurer through HCAI, the system Ontario clinics and auto insurers use for accident claims. We walk you through each step.

Bring to your first visit: photo ID, your auto insurer's name, claim number, adjuster's name and phone, the date of the accident, and any notes from a doctor or hospital.
